Scuba Diving in Cozumel: Drift Dives, Two-Tank Boats and Courses

Usually yes. The reefs off the west and south coast lie inside the Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel, and everyone who enters the water there needs a daily wristband, which inspectors check out on the water. Some tours include it and some collect it from you at the boat, in cash — and that single line in the listing explains most of the price difference between two otherwise identical snorkelling trips. Check it before you compare two prices.

Not comfortably, and in our inventory of 189 tours there is not one that actually departs from Cozumel. The route is ferry to Playa del Carmen, then 45 minutes by road to Tulum or about two hours to Chichén Itzá, then the same again back — ten to twelve hours door to door, of which roughly two hours are at the ruins. The trips that exist start in Cancún or Playa del Carmen. If the big Maya sites are the point of your holiday, base yourself on the mainland for those days.

Mostly no, and the postcard views are the reason people try. The eastern side faces the open Caribbean: there is surf, there are rip currents, and there are no lifeguards outside one or two sheltered bays such as Chen Río. Locals swim there on calm days and know which bay to pick. Treat the east coast as a place to drive, look and photograph, and do your swimming on the western side, where the beach clubs are.

For the town and the western hotel strip you do not — it is walkable and taxis are everywhere. For the east coast you do: there is no public transport across the island and no ride-hailing app, so your options are a rental car, a scooter, a taxi with paid waiting time, or one of the jeep and buggy tours that do exactly that loop. Fuel, insurance and a driving licence check are part of any rental here, and the buggy and quad operators set a minimum driver age through their insurer.

Less than it reaches Tulum or Playa del Carmen, and the reason is geographic rather than lucky: the inhabited west coast of the island faces the mainland and lies in the lee, so the weed drifting in from the Atlantic hits the east coast and the outward-facing Riviera Maya first. The heavier months are roughly April to August. It is a real advantage, but nobody can promise you a clear beach on a given day.

Less than the ship’s port hours suggest. All-aboard is normally 30 to 60 minutes before departure, and the walk from the pier gates back through security takes time as well, so plan to be back at the gangway an hour early and pick a tour that ends well before that. Cozumel handled 4.73 million cruise passengers on 1,300 ships in 2025, with January and December each above 160 calls — on those days the beach clubs nearest the piers fill by mid-morning and the reefs are busy. An early departure or a southern stop buys you space.
